Tamara Williamson More than a decade/Small Songs

Tamara é uma songwriter e produtora, de origem inglesa (Putney, Londres) mas que reside desde os anos '90 no Canadá. Realizou concertos ou acompanhou em tournée entre outros músicos Oasis, Jewel e, mais recentemente, Feist.

Paralelamente, uma outra faceta artistica é o desenho de trajes para equitação, tendo igualmente reconhecimento público neste particular, pois alguns dos mais importantes cavaleiros da América do Norte vestem roupas por si desenhadas. O contacto com actividades equestres e com cavalos foi algo constante desde a sua juventude, logo não é de estranhar a contínua e transversal referência a estes ao longo das músicas e álbuns na sua carreira.

Tamara na primeira pessoa:

“I have predominately been a musician and was signed to a major label. In 2001 I moved out of Toronto and bought a hobby farm with my husband. I found myself in the heart of horse country and started training in dressage. I now have a huge pinto named Ollie Orca and we are aiming to show Level Three this summer.

"As you can imagine, with my background in music and performing, I love the art of the kur. I like to think that if we had more riders riding to music, we could all have more fun and the sport could reach a wider audience.”

Rufus Does Judy… é a recriação de um concerto de Judy Garland em 1961 no mesmo Carnegie Hall onde Judy protagonizou um dos mais celebrados concertos de sempre, seguindo escrupulosamente a exacta sequência do concerto original – Rufus chega mesmo a parar para falar nos mesmos intervalos que Judy, gozando com isso. A recriação segue uma lógica próxima do remake cinematográfico, sendo por isso também a homenagem de um grande cantor para outro, uma homenagem a Judy Garland, mas também aos grandes compositores que consigo trabalharam e, em última análise, ao género, ao musical e à Broadway, enquanto espírito, música e ambiente.

Belissima voz, poderosa e quente, ao que não é alheio o facto de ela ter feito parte de um coro de música gospel na sua juventude em Brigthon. Este é o terceiro disco, sendo os anteriores Under the Munka Moon (2004), um conjunto de vários projectos (singles, remixes, colaborações) em conjunto com The Quantic Soul Orchestra, e My Favourite Letters (2005) criado por Alice com o co-escritor, produtor, guitarrista Alex Cowan (aka TM Juke).

“Music is communication, even though I grew up in the countryside in England, the music helps you to understand the issues that a song expresses—be it love, prejudice, not being able to pay your bills, happiness, sorrow, racial inequality, your aspirations, dancing, mourning … life itself.

Music is an expression of human life and we are all drawn to different types. I’m moved by all the world’s many genres of music. But soul music is what resonates most strongly in my heart.”

“Ah, my dear friend Alex. I just love working with him. Our working relationship is always evolving and ever-changing as things that are alive should always be moving and growing. It’s like; we’ll push each other into different places. And for writing music, that can sometimes be very good.”

“Alex might have had a musical idea and I’d say, ‘Hold on, let’s have a go with it this other way instead’ and we’d change things ’round. “Growing up, I was surrounded by different types of music and you know, you just get taken by something, don’t you? It hits you in the right place and you think, ‘Yeah, Baby, I like that!’ That gospel stuff is wicked, isn’t it?And artists like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin … I was really small, playing with my Lego, taping this stuff off of the radio. I just fell in love with soul music, quite honestly. Just hearing that music hit the spot.”

Ópera em quatro actos, cuja acção passa-se em Sevilha, Carmen (nome da protagonista) é a história de uma cigana que se apaixona por José, um sargento do Exército, que de início não lhe corresponde no amor. No final, José cede aos encantos de Carmen. No entanto com o passar do tempo, os papéis invertem-se e é Carmen quem rejeita José, apaixonando-se ela então por um toureiro, Escamillo. José, enfurecido de ciúmes, mata Carmen, arrependendo-se de imediato. Nesse momento Escamillo triunfa na arena e sai em ombros pela porta grande da Praça de Touros, vitorioso e orgulhoso.

Aqui com a voz e a interpretação da imortal Maria Callas, ao vivo no Covent Garden de Londres, em 1962.

For Emma, Forever Ago Bon Iver

Disco de estreia, lançado em Fevereiro do ano transacto.

Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver (pronunciado: Bohn eevair, do francês "bom inverno" e escrito propositadamente de forma errada) mudou-se para uma remota cabana, propriedade de seu pai, na floresta da Northwestern Wisconsin no início do inverno vivendo sozinho durante três meses, preenchendo seus dias com tarefas ao redor da terra. O resultado desse tempo de recobro e isolamento quase monástico foi este conjunto de canções.

As palavras de Vernon:

“I left North Carolina and went up there because I didn’t know where else to go and I knew that I wanted to be alone and I knew that I wanted to be where it was cold"

"I had a very light set-up, a basic small recording set-up: a Shure SM52 and an old Silvertone guitar. I had my brother drop off his old drums... some other small things - things I would make or find lying around."

Tendo no passado acompanhado bandas como os White Stripes e the Strokes na suas digressões ao vivo e já com dois álbuns prévios - Fever To Tell, de 2003 e Show Your Bones, de 2006, a banda formada por Karen O, Brian Chase e Nick Zinner mantém a periocidade de lançamentos e apresenta neste inicio de 2009 novo disco. Vocalista dos Metric, banda new wave/indie rock oriunda de Nova Iorque, embora residente actualmente em Toronto. Já foram nomeados para diversos prémios de música no Canadá. Contam-se quatro álbuns na sua discografia: primeiro foi "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" lançado em 2003; o segundo "Live it Out" lançado em Outubro de 2005, o terceiro foi "Grow Up and Blow Away" em 2007. O último, "Fantasies" estará disponivel durante Abril deste ano, embora já seja possivel ouvi-lo na net.

Para memória futura o grupo é constituido por Emily Haines (voz e sintetizadores), James Shaw(guitarra), Josh Winstead (baixo) e Joules Scott-Key (baterista). Emily Haines e James Shaw também já tocam com o grupo "Broken Social Scene", Haines também participou como convidada nos álbuns de Stars. KC Accidental, Delerium, The Stills, e Jason Collett. "When I was a little kid, I would creep downstairs to the piano and write rudimentary songs about imaginary places”

O álbum em causa é "Knives don't have your back", e foi a estreia a solo ou melhor dizendo num projecto paralelo de seu nome Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton - sendo que a acompanhar estão Scott Minor (Sparklehorse), Justin Peroff (Broken Social Scene), Evan Cranley (Stars) e ainda Jimmy Shaw (Metric). O álbum está disponivel desde os finais de 2006 (sim, pois, eu descobri-o agora..). Anna Netrebko

A cinderela do Mariinsky

Reconhecida não só como uma excelente performer vocal mas também pelas suas qualidades teatrais, a história de Netrebko tem contornos de conto. Foi enquanto estudante no conservatório de S. Peterburgo e trabalhando como empregada de limpezas do teatro Mariinsky, o mais importante e renomeado teatro da Russia que foi seleccionada durante uma audição pelo então director Valeri Gergiev. Tem sido desde então uma das mais citadas e reconhecidas sopranos da nova geração, contribuindo pelas suas performances para uma aproximação da ópera clássica a novas gerações e públicos.

Ficam aqui duas performances marcantes. A primeira em 2003 na companhia de Rolando Villazón em Salzburgo interpretando a carnal e trágica Violeta Valery na opera de Verdi "La traviata" uma das mais reconhecidas e representadas óperas, aqui com cenário e cenografia contemporâneas. A segunda sugestão vai para a interpretação arrebatadora de "Meine Lippen sie Kussen so heiss" na ópera Guiditta da autoria de Frans Lehar, durante os concertos Promenade em Londres no ano de 2007.

Agora que o segundo álbum está quase quase a chegar (e até por isso) vale a pena recordar o titulo de estreia de Leela James, "A change is gonna come" de 2005. Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan e Tina Turner foram algumas das vozes a que Leela foi comparada aquando do lançamento desse seu disco de estreia. Ela própria assume as influências e procura integrá-las na sua visão de música Soul e R&B. Participaram como colaboradores neste disco nomes como Kanye West ou Wyclef Jean, um dos fundadores dos Fugees.

O single de apresentação do primeiro álbum, "Music", é ele próprio uma carta de intenções musicais:

Alison Sudol, aka: "A Fine Frenzy"

Nasceu em Seattle (23.12.1984) e desde os cinco anos reside em Los Angelos, Alison considera-se uma apaixonada pela literatura de Carol Lewis e Charles Dickens. Nomes como Ella Fitzgerald, a Motown, Louis Armstrong, Elton John, Aretha Frankin e os Beatles, juntamente com os clássicos Technicolor televisivos e cinematográficos dos anos '50, constituem as suas referências musicais visuais.

Auto-didacta ao piano, Alison actualmente sente-se próxima dos britânicos Radiohead, Coldplay e Keane, de Philip Glass e de grupos islandeses como Bjork e Sigur Rós..
